Herbal Remedies for Immune Support - Advice From Dee Atkinson

Support Immunity with Echinacea

Supporting the bodies natural immunity and taking some simple precautionary measures is the best way to protect your self from colds and flu viruses. Viruses are spread by contact and droplet infection. We are all in contact with many different viruses at any given time. In most cases our immune system is able to deal with the virus and we never know that we have been threatened. Occasionally, when our immune system is compromised, we succumb and develop flu-like symptoms.

There are many things that can effect our immune systems: from stress, to poor diet or even other underlying other health problems. It is important to be prepared in vulnerable situations. For example, if you know that your are about to have a very stressful time at work, or if you know that that a lot of people around you are suffering from viruses - then you need to take preventative measures.

In our current climate, where we know that many people are exposed to viruses including Swine Flu, there are some simple measures that can be taken to support you immune system.

Support Immunity with Echinacea

Organic Echinacea Tincture
The Echinacea herb has an anti-viral action and can help support the bodies immune system. Taken regularly it will help protect against colds and flu.

Organic Echinacea and Elderberry Spray
This organic spray directs the herbs straight onto the affected area. It is very convenient for carrying in handbags and briefcases, so that it can be used as soon as you are aware that you have come into contact with others carrying viruses. Blended with honey, which has anti-bacterial properties, this spray eases sore or itchy throats - often the first sign that infection may be developing.

Support Immunity with Echinacea

Echinacea and Elderflower Blend
This blend is used to help the body when it is actually under attack from a virus. Containing elderflower, Sage, Garlic, Thyme and Astragalus as well as Echinacea, this is a powerful anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and anti-catarrhal blend. I use it regularly in clinic to speed recovery from colds and flu.

Echinacea Super Plus
In some cases people get repeated infections of are especially prone to infection due to a lower immunity. This blend of herbs includes Echinacea, Thyme, Golden seal, Lemon balm, Liquorice and the American herb, Osha, which used to be called 'Indian Penicillin'. I use this blend to support people suffering from long-term lowered immunity, people who get repeated infections and who are very susceptible to viruses.

Vitamin C
Plays an important role in the bodies defence mechanism. It helps the body to fight colds and flu. In high doses it stops viruses transferring from cell to cell. Take a minimum of 1000mg per day.

Zinc
A supplement essential for immune system function.

As well as using herbs and supplements it is important to take simple precautions to avoid virus spread. Wash you hand regularly, especially before eating. If you travel on public transport or are in crowded places, be especially careful about hand washing. If you sneeze use a tissue and dispose of it in a bin. In the office environment keep telephone hand sets clean and wipe your desk area over with cleaning fluid regularly.
